The Heart-Mind Connection

Written on 02/07/2025

You might know that mental health directly affects your mood, but did you know it can also affect your heart health? When you feel stressed or anxious, this can cause your heart rate and blood pressure to rise. Constant stress wears on your heart, and makes you more vulnerable to heart attack and stroke. If you are dealing with depression, you might make lifestyle choices that negatively impact your heart health, like:

  • Eating an unhealthy diet
  • Getting poor sleep
  • Not staying active
  • Smoking or drinking alcohol

It’s important to understand the connection between our mental health and our hearts, and take steps to care for them both. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is always high on the list, but a few other tips include:

  • Learning the signs and symptoms of mental health and heart disease
  • Having an open, honest conversation with your healthcare provider
  • Staying connected to people who support you and your mental health

Remember, taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Prioritize them both for a healthier and happier life!
